Magnus Lundgren Macro picture in Lembeh Strait

Exposure Expeditions continued the “Best of Indonesia” expedition with a macro workshop by Magnus Lundgren in legendary Lembeh Strait which by many is dubbed the holy grail of muck diving. This is the craddle of weird and wonderful creatures we had great success finding the finest selection of strange, hairy, fluffy or weedy creatures. Many of critters are living in strange relations like a gobies joint venture with a shrimp, a sea urchin or a jellyfish carried on the back of a crab as a defence or an anemones, a nudibranchs or a sea cucumbers being a habitat for a partner shrimp or a crab. It was a stunning macro world for us all to discover with Divers Lodge Lembeh.

In a few months time you will be able to enjoy the coffee table book we will start making from the images taken by the participants during this Exposure Expedition called “The best of Indonesia”

March 2014 - Exposure Expeditions Photo workshop with Magnus Lundgren in Raja Empat in cooperation with PH Travel and Kri Eco Resort.

The participants had an amazing experience diving among the coral reefs ranked as number in terms of underwater biodiversity. This remote group of island’s reefs are more resistant to threats like coral bleaching and coral disease due to their completeness and complexity.
More pictures and information about this workshop soon to come!

March 2014:

On Palawan Island in the Philippines, an 80,000-acre biodiversity hotspot which is home to endemic species such as the Palawan bearcat, Palawan pangolin, and key populations of the Palawan horned frog, Philippine flat-headed frog, and Philippine cockatoo, is becoming a reserve.

Rainforest Philipines

“Rainforests, including those in Palawan, are the richest places on earth, holding the majority of the planet’s biodiversity, yet 100 acres of rainforests around the world are cleared every minute,” said Dr. Paul Salaman, chief executive officer of Rainforest Trust. “Our new project in the Philippines is an extraordinary opportunity to save a vast area of unprotected rainforest near an important UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Center for Sustainability, our local partner, has been laying the groundwork for this project for five years. The support of the city government of Puerto Princesa, recognized for its excellent conservation track record, has been critical. As a result, the new reserve is going to safeguard many rare endemic species.”

Rainforest Trust has already raised over $160,000 and requires an additional $40,000 to fund the development and protection of the reserve. This includes creating a management plan, increasing the number of wardens to enhance law enforcement, and providing sustainable livelihoods for the local Batak tribe.

Nauticam announces the release of the NA-EM1, the latest in its acclaimed line of precision crafted underwater camera housings.

Nauticam OMD-EM1Nauticam OMD-EM1 rear

The Olympus OM-D E-M1 is the most capable micro four-thirds (m4/3) camera available and aims squarely at the pro and high end enthusiast. With a slew of customizable controls and extensive menu options, the proud owner of the E-M1 can personalize this camera like perhaps no other. The NA-EM1 takes advantage of the E-M1’s extensive control set and huge lens selection and brings them into the underwater realm in the most innovative, best engineered, and most ergonomic camera housing available.

Nauticam is simply not content to rest on previous successes like the renowned NA-EM5. Given the large number of densely packed controls on the camera, the E-M1 housing presented a challenge in itself. The designers and engineers at Nauticam sought to not only meet this challenge, but take the human-machine interface a step further and keep the focus not on making it easier to make the housing, but to make the housing easier to use. An example is the new integrated handle system; with the pro shooter in mind, this housing is designed for use with the hand on the handle in a manner reminiscent of Nauticam SLR housings. The result is a housing that is easier to hold and is more stable, and is easier to shoot.

A quarter of sharks and rays threatened with extinction.

Sawfish

January 2014: A staggering quarter of the world’s sharks and rays are threatened with extinction according to The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, with ray species particularly at risk.

The study, the result of a collaboration of 302 experts from 64 countries and the IUCN Shark Specialist Group (SSG), analysed the conservation status of 1,041 shark, ray and closely related chimaera species.

“Our analysis shows that sharks and their relatives are facing an alarmingly elevated risk of extinction,” says Dr Nick Dulvy, IUCN SSG Co-Chair and Canada Research Chair at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia. “In greatest peril are the largest species of rays and sharks, especially those living in shallow water that is accessible to fisheries.”

Overfishing is the main threat to the species, according to the paper. Reported catches of sharks, rays and chimaeras peaked in 2003 and have been dominated by rays for the last 40 years. Actual catches are likely to be grossly under-reported.Unintentionally caught sharks and rays account for much of the catch, yet developing markets and depleting fishery targets have made this “bycatch” increasingly welcome.

Intentional killing of sharks and rays due to the perceived risk that they pose to people, fishing gear or target species is contributing to the threatened status of at least 12 species.
